Miami is well known for its luxury art market driven by Art Basel and a host of commercial galleries. Beneath the popular radar, the city also plays host to a robust network of artist and cultural organizations devoted to critical creative practice and experimental production; organizations that make Miami an exciting cultural home rather than a commercial tourist destination. This rich array of artist-run spaces and centers, alternative galleries, and independent artists’ projects challenge the image of Miami and the presumptions about art for collectors and communities alike.

Lead Miami partners BFI, Cannonball, Dimensions Variable and Locust Projects designed a convening program focused on how small arts organizations can survive and sustain in these times of accelerated capitalism. Today’s pressures require new practices for adjusting to rapid shifts in technology, climate change, economic, social and political forces. Major topics included the collusion and resistance of artists’ in complex social processes like gentrification, the importance of critical discourse and pathways for its development, strategies and tactics for organizations to endure difficult transitions, and how small spaces can amplify alternative values in the context of art world and market presumptions.

The convening was held at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, a venue known for its community access in a neighborhood at the cultural heart of Haitian diaspora. The program included four days of panels, breakout sessions, workshops, tours and local arts events. 350+ arts organizers from Miami and across the nation came together to share the values and practices of artist-run and artist-centered spaces and projects, learn, exchange, connect, and play. 

The convening hosted over 120+ presenters. Common Field awarded 50 scholarships to attendees. In response to feedback from Minneapolis 2015, the program included more break-out dialogues, intensive and intimate discussions, and opportunities for creative exchange. The convening also provided an important outlet for national members to collectively plot futures for Common Field--brainstorming research trajectories, channels for resource exchanges, and outlining advocacy strategies for the second official year of the organization.

PARTNERS
Common Field is a national network of artists’ organizations that launched officially in Fall 2015 at the Common Field Convening in Minneapolis, also known as Hand-in-Glove, which had prior iterations in New Orleans (2013) and Chicago (2011). The launch of Common Field opened membership to organizations and organizers across the country who create experimental, contemporary platforms for visual artists. Since that time, over 400 groups and individuals have joined as members of Common Field. Self-nominating members include artist-run and non-profit art spaces, publications, digital exhibition venues, festivals, residencies, collectives and collaborative organizers, curators, artists, and administrators working in a variety of mediums. Common Field creates visibility and viability for the field of artist organizations through connection, advocacy, research, and resources. 

Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI) is a 501(c)(3) artist run space dedicated to creativity, experimentation, and discourse in contemporary art. BFI aims to create a bridge between Miami and the International art world by curating a program that alternates between the local and the global. BFI is committed to building the Miami arts community by offering support for artist projects, in particular, NOMADIC MIAMI, a platform for exhibitions and public programming chosen by artists that takes a behind the scenes look at the city and its artistic offerings. This includes WEIRD MIAMI bus tours and educational programming. BFI is a not-for-profit funded primarily by grants, donations, and the sale of print editions. 

Cannonball is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), arts organization dedicated to supporting artists, innovative forms of cultural production, and education to advance critical discourse and understanding of contemporary art practice. Cannonball’s artist-centric values are mirrored in its experimental programs, resources, and opportunities that respond to the needs of today’s artists and reflect our efforts to better understand the nuances and textures of South Florida. 

Dimensions Variable (DV) is an exhibition space based in Miami and committed to the presentation and support of contemporary art. Through a collaborative exchange with artists and institutions, DV develops a contemporary art program that engages the community and promotes new and experimental practices. DV was founded in 2009 by artists Frances Trombly and Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova who direct the gallery. 

Locust Projects is a not for profit exhibition space dedicated to providing contemporary visual artists the freedom to experiment with new ideas without the pressures of gallery sales or limitations of conventional exhibition spaces. Local, national and international artists are encouraged to create site-specific installations as an extension of their representative work. Locust Projects supports the local community through educational initiatives and programming that is free to the public.
